The timeless tale of “Never Growing Up” has encouraged generations to soar above all else to achieve your dreams. That phrase originated with Peter Pan, a character in Scottish novelist / playwright J.M. Barrie’s novel The Little White Bird (1902). J.M. Barrie then brought the character to life in his stage play titled Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up, premiering on December 27th of 1904 at the Duke of York’s Theater in London. From then on Peter Pan has flown across decades of imaginations, appearing in the 1953 animated Disney film, the 1991 film Hook with Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman, and so many more, including Peter and the Starcatcher.
Peter and the Starcatcher, based on the 2004 novel Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, was adapted for the stage by Rick Elice. The play premiered on February 13th, 2009 at the La Jollia Playhouse in California before transferring to Off-Broadway in 2011 and then opening on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theater on April 15th 2012, starring Celia Keenan-Bolger as Molly, Christian Borle as Black Stache and Adam Chanlet-Berat as Peter. At the 2012 Tony Awards the production was nominated for 9 Tony awards and took home 5 including Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play, Best Sound Design of a Play, Best Lighting Design of a Play, Best Costume Design of a Play, and Best Scenic Design of a Play. The show ran on Broadway until January 30th 2013 and re-opened Off-Broadway at New World Stages in March of 2013, running until January 2014.
I was fortunate to have seen this production while living in NYC and fell in love with the play from start to finish with its quick pace and wit. The background given to each character in this Peter Pan prequel delivers entertainment that feels both nostalgic and new. Growing up in a Disney household taught me to keep dreaming and reach for the stars. In a lot of ways, that mindset has pushed me to achieve whatever I set my mind to. I have been humbled by the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in this production, and am incredibly fortunate to have worked with this talented set of performers in our community who make this show what it is. So sit back, relax, and come aboard as we venture off to London in 1885.
Enjoy the Show!
